How HomeMath prices a slab
HomeMath multiplies the slab's area by a published installed price range per square foot for each finish: plain or broom $6.50–$10.50; stamped, basic $10–$14; stamped, mid-range $14–$20; stamped, high-end $20 and up (Concrete Network, read October 2026). The ranges name no thickness, so HomeMath reads them as a 4 in slab and adds the concrete of any extra thickness at $160–$195 a cubic yard. Quoted prices are multiplied by the same area, and the difference over plain is each total minus the plain total. In metric, HomeMath converts meters and centimeters exactly (1 in = 2.54 cm) and shows the result in cubic meters, liters and square meters. In metric the same ranges are shown per square meter.
The published rules it uses: US customary units; metric conversion; published price ranges. Their sources, and how HomeMath tests every result, are on the about page.
What does a slab cost per square foot installed? (October 2026)
The ranges come from Concrete Network's concrete prices (updated July 14, 2026) and its stamped concrete cost page (reviewed January 26, 2026). They are national figures for materials and labor, so a local quote can sit outside them.
| Finish | What it includes | Per sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| Plain or broom | a plain gray slab | $6.50–$10.50 |
| Stamped, basic | one pattern, one color | $10–$14 |
| Stamped, mid-range | borders, contrasting patterns, several colors | $14–$20 |
| Stamped, high-end | several patterns and colors, scored designs, hand coloring | $20 and up |
Concrete Network gives no separate price for a broom finish, so $6.50–$10.50 is the plain slab range, and the calculator uses it for both. The ranges name no thickness: the calculator reads them as a 4 in slab and adds the concrete of any extra thickness at $160–$195 a cubic yard.

What does a slab cost per square meter?
Switch the units to metric and the calculator takes the size in meters and the thickness in centimeters, gives the area in square meters and takes your quotes per m². The estimate still comes from the same published US ranges, converted: one square meter is about 10.76 sq ft, so a price per square foot × 10.76 is the price per m². A slab over 10.2 cm (4 in) adds its extra concrete at $209–$255 a cubic meter.
| Finish | Per m² |
|---|---|
| Plain or broom | $69.97–$113 |
| Stamped, basic | $108–$151 |
| Stamped, mid-range | $151–$215 |
| Stamped, high-end | $215 and up |
| Slab | Plain or broom | Basic stamped |
|---|---|---|
| 3 × 3 m (9 m²) | $630–$1,017 | $969–$1,356 |
| 4 × 4 m (16 m²) | $1,119–$1,808 | $1,722–$2,411 |
| 4 × 5 m (20 m²) | $1,399–$2,260 | $2,153–$3,014 |
| 6 × 6 m (36 m²) | $2,519–$4,069 | $3,875–$5,425 |
| 5 × 12 m (60 m²) | $4,198–$6,781 | $6,458–$9,042 |
What do common slabs cost?
At the published ranges, 4 in thick: plain or broom $6.50–$10.50 and basic stamped $10–$14 per sq ft.
- 10 × 10 ft pad (100 sq ft)Plain $650–$1,050 · Stamped $1,000–$1,400
- 12 × 16 ft slab (192 sq ft)Plain $1,248–$2,016 · Stamped $1,920–$2,688
- 20 × 20 ft slab (400 sq ft)Plain $2,600–$4,200 · Stamped $4,000–$5,600
- 12 × 40 ft driveway (480 sq ft)Plain $3,120–$5,040 · Stamped $4,800–$6,720
- 24 × 24 ft garage slab (576 sq ft)Plain $3,744–$6,048 · Stamped $5,760–$8,064
How do I price a slab by hand?
- Area: 16 × 20 = 320 sq ft.
- Plain or broom: 320 × $6.50 = $2,080, and 320 × $10.50 = $3,360.
- Basic stamped: 320 × $10 to $14 = $3,200–$4,480.
- With a quote in hand, use its price per square foot instead of the range: area × quoted price is the installed total.
What a finish adds in percent depends only on the two prices per square foot, not on the size, so a finish that adds a given share to a small slab adds the same share to a large one.
What is the difference between plain, broom and stamped?
Plain concrete is floated and troweled smooth, which can be slick when wet outdoors. A broom finish leaves fine ridges for grip, the usual choice for driveways, walkways and pool surrounds. Stamped concrete is pressed with patterned mats, often with color, to look like stone, brick or slate; it takes more labor and materials, and its sealer is renewed over the years.
What does stamped concrete cost?
Concrete Network prices stamped concrete in three levels: basic at $10–$14 per sq ft (one pattern, one color), mid-range at $14–$20 (borders, contrasting patterns, several colors) and high-end from $20 (several patterns and colors, scored designs, hand coloring). The 16 × 20 ft slab is $3,200–$4,480 as basic stamped, against $2,080–$3,360 plain. For a stamped patio, with the removal of an old one, use the concrete patio cost calculator.
To price your own, ask for a stamped price per square foot that names the pattern, the colors and the sealer, and enter it in the Stamped field. Things that change a stamped quote, worth asking about:
- The pattern, and whether borders or a second pattern are included
- Integral color (mixed in) or color hardener (spread on top), and the number of colors
- The sealer, and how often the contractor suggests resealing
- Steps, curves and edges, which take more hand work than open areas
What does a new sidewalk cost, and a replaced one?
Concrete Network's walkway page (updated May 21, 2020) prices a new one at $6–$12 per sq ft. Replacing adds the removal of the old walk, at Fixr's $2–$4 per sq ft for plain concrete, disposal included.
| Walkway | New | Replaced |
|---|---|---|
| 4 × 20 | $480–$960 | $640–$1,280 |
| 4 × 35 | $840–$1,680 | $1,120–$2,240 |
| 4 × 50 | $1,200–$2,400 | $1,600–$3,200 |
| 4 × 100 | $2,400–$4,800 | $3,200–$6,400 |
For a bigger tear-out, price the removal in the concrete removal cost calculator.
What does a concrete driveway cost?
A driveway is a long slab, but its prices run by design and it is often a replacement, so it has its own calculator. Concrete Network puts a plain driveway at $5–$8 per sq ft, which makes its average two-car driveway of 16 × 40 ft $3,200–$5,120. For the decorative designs, the removal of an old driveway and the same driveway in asphalt, use the concrete driveway cost calculator.
How do I compare a quote that gives only a total?
Some contractors quote a total, not a price per square foot. Divide the total by the area to compare it with other quotes and with the ranges above; the calculator does this in the quote check field. For a 400 sq ft slab:
| Quote total | Per sq ft |
|---|---|
| $2,000 | $5 |
| $2,800 | $7 |
| $3,600 | $9 |
| $5,200 | $13 |
| $6,400 | $16 |
How much does a thicker slab add to the price?
Two quotes at the same price per square foot are only equal at the same thickness. For a 20 × 20 ft slab, with the extra concrete over 4 in priced at $160–$195 a yard:
| Thickness | Cubic yards | Plain installed |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 4.94 | $2,600–$4,200 |
| 5 | 6.17 | $2,798–$4,441 |
| 6 | 7.41 | $2,995–$4,681 |

Frequently asked questions
- How much does a concrete slab cost?
- About $6.50–$10.50 per square foot installed for a plain slab, by Concrete Network's figures (read October 2026), so a 20 × 20 ft slab of 400 sq ft is about $2,600–$4,200. Basic stamped concrete is $10–$14 per sq ft, or $4,000–$5,600 for the same slab. Local quotes can sit outside these national ranges.
- How do I calculate the price of a concrete slab?
- Multiply the slab's area in square feet by the installed price per square foot. A 20 × 20 ft slab is 400 sq ft, so at $6.50 per sq ft it is $2,600. Use the price your contractor quotes for your thickness and finish.
- How much more does stamped concrete cost than plain?
- Published ranges put basic stamped at $10–$14 per sq ft against $6.50–$10.50 for plain, and the gap grows with borders and colors. With quotes of $6 for plain and $14 for stamped per sq ft, a 400 sq ft slab is $2,400 plain and $5,600 stamped, $3,200 more. Stamping adds forming tools, color and sealer, and more labor per square foot. For a stamped patio, the concrete patio cost calculator prices each stamped level installed.
- What is the difference between plain, broom and stamped concrete?
- Plain (troweled) concrete is finished smooth. A broom finish drags a broom across the fresh surface for grip, the common choice for driveways and walks. Stamped concrete is pressed with patterned mats, often with color, to look like stone, brick or slate.
- What does a concrete slab cost per square meter?
- About $69.97–$113 per square meter installed for a plain slab, and $108–$151 for basic stamped, which are Concrete Network's US ranges per square foot converted (1 m² is about 10.76 sq ft). They are US prices in dollars. Switch the slab price calculator to metric to enter meters and quotes per m².
- How do I compare two quotes given as totals?
- Divide each total by the slab's area to get its price per square foot. The calculator does this in the quote check: type a quote's total, and it shows the price per square foot for your slab's size.
- How do I estimate the price of a concrete driveway?
- Use the concrete driveway cost calculator: it prices a driveway by its design, adds the removal of an old one and shows asphalt beside it. Concrete Network puts a plain driveway at $5–$8 per sq ft, so its average two-car driveway of 16 × 40 ft is $3,200–$5,120.
- Does a thicker slab cost more per square foot?
- Yes. A 6-inch slab holds 50% more concrete than a 4-inch slab of the same size. The calculator adds the extra concrete at $160–$195 a cubic yard, which is $0.99–$1.20 per sq ft for 6 inches; a contractor may charge more labor too, so compare quotes only at the same thickness.
- Where do the calculator's price ranges come from?
- From Concrete Network's published US prices, read in October 2026: its concrete prices page (updated July 14, 2026) for a plain slab and its stamped concrete cost page (reviewed January 26, 2026) for the stamped levels. They are national ranges, not quotes: region, season, access and contractor move the price, so type your own quotes when you have them.
- What else goes into the price of a slab?
- Excavation and grading, the gravel base, forms, reinforcement (wire mesh or rebar), control joints, finishing, sealer, and a pump when the truck can't reach. Ask for a quote that lists them, so two quotes compare like for like.
