Concrete Weight Calculator

A cubic yard of concrete weighs about 4,050 lb, 2.03 US tons, at the usual 150 lb per cubic foot. Enter a slab, a footing, a round column or a volume to get its weight in pounds, tons and kilograms, per cubic yard and per square foot of slab, with a rebar grid added if the slab is reinforced, the dumpsters it would fill once it comes out, and the loads at your truck's payload.

How HomeMath calculates concrete weight

HomeMath works out the volume first, as the concrete calculator does (length × width × thickness, or π × radius² × height), and multiplies it by the weight per cubic foot: 150 lb for typical concrete, 4,050 lb a cubic yard. A reinforced slab adds the steel: two layers of bars, one each way, at the spacing, × the bar's weight per foot. Tons are pounds ÷ 2,000, and the weight per square foot is the thickness in feet × the weight per cubic foot. In metric the weight comes out in kilograms and tonnes.

The published rules it uses: concrete weight; rebar sizes and mesh; removal, weight and hauling; US customary units; metric conversion. Their sources, and how HomeMath tests every result, are on the about page.

What do half a yard to 10 yards of concrete weigh?

A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so a yard of typical concrete weighs 27 × 150 = 4,050 lb, just over 2 US tons. Inch Calculator gives standard concrete 3,700–4,220 lb a cubic yard. The table runs from half a yard to a full truck's worth.

What does a concrete slab weigh per square foot?

A slab's weight per square foot is its thickness in feet × 150 lb: a 4 inch slab is 4 ÷ 12 × 150 = 50 lb per square foot. Multiply by the area for the whole slab, or use the table.

How do I work out the weight of concrete by hand?

Take a 12 × 16 ft patio, 4 inches thick.

  1. Volume: 12 × 16 × 0.333 = 64 cu ft.
  2. Weight: 64 × 150 = 9,600 lb.
  3. Tons: 9,600 ÷ 2,000 = 4.80 US tons; in kilograms, × 0.4536 = 4,354 kg.

For a round pier or hole, the volume is π × radius² × depth: a 12 inch pier 4 ft deep holds 3.14 cu ft and weighs 471 lb.

Does wet, cured or reinforced concrete weigh more?

  • Cured concrete: a solid slab weighs 150 lb per cubic foot by Dumpsters.com, the figure the calculator starts with and the one the removal estimates use.
  • Wet concrete: it holds all its mixing water, and part of it leaves as the slab dries. The published figures here don't give the difference; Quikrete gives its bagged Concrete Mix about 140 lb per cubic foot freshly mixed, which the calculator offers for bagged pours.
  • Reinforced concrete: the steel adds its own weight, little against the concrete. Tick the rebar grid to add it.

What do lightweight and bagged concrete weigh?

The calculator starts at 150 lb per cubic foot and offers the others below; Inch Calculator gives lightweight concrete 2,360–3,120 lb a cubic yard. You can also type your own figure from a mix design or a supplier's ticket.

How much concrete fits in a dumpster or on a truck?

A 10 yard dumpster for concrete usually allows 10 tons, by Dumpsters.com. That is 4.9 cubic yards of solid concrete, or about 400 sq ft of a 4 inch slab, so concrete reaches the weight limit long before it fills the box. Broken up, it takes about twice the space of the slab it came from. A pickup or trailer carries what the payload sticker in the driver's door allows; type it and the calculator counts the loads.

What does concrete weigh in metric?

Switch to metric and the sizes go in meters and centimeters; the weight comes out in kilograms and tonnes. Typical concrete at 150 lb per cubic foot is 2,403 kg per cubic meter, which Inch Calculator rounds to 2,400. A 3 × 3 m slab 10 cm thick is 0.9 m³ and weighs about 2,162 kg.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a yard of concrete weigh?
About 4,050 lb, or 2.03 US tons, at 150 lb per cubic foot × 27 cubic feet. Inch Calculator puts standard concrete at 3,700–4,220 lb a cubic yard, so the mix moves it a little either way. Bought as bags, a yard is 45 bags of 80 lb, 3,600 lb of dry mix, because the mix weighs less than the concrete it makes once you add the water.
How much does a concrete slab weigh per square foot?
50 lb per square foot at 4 inches thick, 62.5 lb at 5 inches and 75 lb at 6 inches: the thickness in feet × 150 lb. A 10 × 10 ft slab 4 inches thick weighs 5,000 lb.
Does cured concrete weigh less than wet concrete?
A little: fresh concrete holds all its mixing water, and part of it leaves as the concrete dries. The published figures HomeMath uses don't separate the two, so it weighs both at 150 lb per cubic foot, Dumpsters.com's figure for a solid slab, and offers Quikrete's 140 lb for its bagged mix as it comes out of the mixer.
How much does rebar add to a slab's weight?
Little. #4 bars 12 inches apart each way add 1.34 lb per square foot, against 50 lb of concrete in a 4 inch slab, about 2.7% more. Tick the rebar grid to add it for your bar and spacing.
How much does a cubic meter of concrete weigh?
About 2,403 kg, 2.40 tonnes: 150 lb per cubic foot converted exactly. Inch Calculator rounds it to 2,400 kg per cubic meter. Switch the calculator to metric for meters, kilograms and tonnes.
How much does a concrete block weigh?
It depends on the block, so the weight calculator doesn't do blocks: it weighs poured concrete. The concrete block calculator counts the blocks for a wall and the concrete to fill their cores.
